preflight reader
An iOS PDF reader for flight crews. It reads the operational flight plan and lays it out as a dashboard, and leaves the document itself intact to read and mark up.
An operational flight plan is a long document, and the figures that shape the flight are spread right through it.
Fuel, weight limits and any SIGMET affecting the route all have to be found before much else can be decided. Preflight Reader reads the release and puts those first, so a briefing can start from what matters rather than from page one.
- 01
The release as a dashboard
Fuel figures, weight limits and any SIGMET on the route are pulled out of the flight plan and shown together, rather than left to be found across the pages.
- 02
Pen and highlighter
The full PDF stays readable and markable, with the two annotation tools crews already use on a printed release.
- 03
Waypoint timing
Enter airborne time and the app calculates ATO, ETO and revised ETOs for every waypoint on the flight plan, down the whole route.
- 04
Supported format
Reads the Flight Keys operational flight plan format — currently the Norse Atlantic Airways variant used in their daily operation.
- 01
The PDF is read on the phone
The flight plan is parsed on the device. There is no upload, no account and no server in the middle, which also means it does not stop working when there is no signal.
- 02
One format, done properly
Rather than half-reading every flight plan format, the app supports Flight Keys — currently the Norse Atlantic Airways variant. Other formats are not supported yet.
- 03
The document still matters
The dashboard sits alongside the release, not instead of it. Everything in the original PDF stays there to be read, checked and marked up.
- 04
It is not a certified instrument
Preflight Reader is a support tool for reading a document you already hold. It is not an approved flight instrument and must not be used as a primary source for planning, dispatch or navigation. The official dispatch documentation and the operator’s approved procedures are always the authority, and responsibility for verifying any figure against them — and for every operational decision taken — rests with the person using the app.
Flight Keys is a trademark or registered trademark of FlightKeys GmbH. Norse Atlantic Airways is a trademark or registered trademark of Norse Atlantic Airways ASA. Both are named here only to state which document format Preflight Reader can read. Preflight Reader is an independent application and is not affiliated with, authorised by, endorsed by or connected to either company.
Flight documents are read on the device and are not uploaded anywhere. The full policy sets out what that means in practice.
